Edward Lewis Rohlfs

St. George, UT- Edward L. Rohlfs, age 66, died January 1, 2010 in St. George, Utah. He was born March 21, 1943 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Rev. Frederich T. Rohlfs and Thelma Lewis Rohlfs Kennedy. He was married to Joan F. Graves in Manning, Iowa, on July 3, 1966. Ed grew up in Avoca, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1961.

After graduation he joined the US Navy and was stationed in Hawaii for four years. When discharged he returned to Iowa to work and attend Junior College in Clarinda. In 1966 he married Joan Graves Rohlfs in the Presbyterian Church in Manning, Iowa. While on their honeymoon they visited the campus of BYU and started classes that fall. Ed graduated with a BS degree in Education and taught Industrial Arts in Utah, Washington, and Iowa (Manning High School 1972-73). In 1974, he decided to return to military service, where he served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Unimak home ported out of Yorktown, Virginia. Later he was an MK-A-School instructor at the Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown. In 1978, as a reservist, he served as Officer-In-Charge of the Search and Rescue station, Milford Haven, Virginia. His military career, both active and reserve duty spanned 32 years.

After his active duty in the Coast Guard, Ed worked at Newport News Ship Building Company in Newport News, Virginia. He worked in various roles and capacities in Navy nuclear powered aircraft carrier and submarine construction. He retired in 2004 after 25 years at the shipyard.

During retirement Ed and his wife Joan enjoyed Rving. They spent summers at Skookum RV Resort close to Newport, Washington. They also have a home in Toquerville, Utah, where Ed spent his time target shooting, walking his dog Anggie and visiting with neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife Joan; son Eric T. (Trisha Johnson) Rohlfs; 1 grandson Porter Rohlfs; his mother Thelma; and 1 brother Fred Rohlfs. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 8th, 11:00 A.M. at the LDS Chapel, 79 North Toquer Blvd., Toquerville, Utah. A public visitation will be held Thursday, January 7th from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. at the Metcalf Mortuary in Hurricane. No visitation will be held before the funeral on Friday. Interment will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
