Funeral Service for Edna Vollstedt was held Tuesday, November 9, 2004, 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Marshall Brown officiated with Marshall Brown as vocalist and Connie Siepker as organist. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery in Manning, Iowa. Casketbearers were Justin Opperman, Robert Opperman, Paul Opperman, Wesley Nulle, Lester Joens, and Gary Schroeder.

Edna Alwena, daughter of Jasper and Alwine (Sievers) Schroeder, was born October 27, 1906, on the family farm north of Manning, Iowa. She attended rural school near her home. After completing her schooling, Edna remained at home and helped other families in the neighborhood.

On June 26, 1932, Edna was united in marriage with William Vollstedt. They lived in Manning where Edna worked for many years at Johnson Department Store on Main Street. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and member of Presbyterian Women. Edna was a 74-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the unit's longest member, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Past President Parley. Her hobbies included knitting and rolling carpet rags for the veterans' rehabilitation hospital. A special project later in her life was knitting stocking caps and mittens for the needy children who were often on her mind. She was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother.

After the death of her husband in 1978 Edna remained in their home. After 60 years there she moved to a small apartment for several years; then in August of 1999 became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died there on Saturday, November 6, 2004, at the age of 98 years and 10 days.

Preceding Edna in death are her husband; parents; great-grandson Matthew James Determan: two brothers: John and Julius Schroeder; and four sisters: Laura Musfeldt, Anna Tank, Ida Joens and Anita Nulle.

She is survived by Phyllis, whom the Vollstedts raised from the time she was 18 months old after the death of her mother, and husband Bill Opperman of Manning; five grandchildren: Debra and husband Ronald Determan of San Diego, California; Janis Opperman of Omaha, Nebraska; Robert Opperman and wife Kathleen of Rockford, Illinois; Beth and husband Steven Kastorff of Geneseo, Illinois; and Paul Opperman and Paula Connors of Santa Rosa, California; six great-grandchildren; Brian and Laura Determan; Justin and Megan Opperman; and Andrea and Paul Kastorff; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
