Edna Izora, daughter of Charles and Bessie (Johnson) Ramsey, was born October 7, 1906 at Botna, Iowa. She received her schooling in the rural schools near her home and in the Manning schools. She was united in marriage with Orla Peters March 5, 1925. They farmed near Manning until moving to town in 1949. Edna has been active in many community affairs. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Manning, The Martha Circle, the Bible Readers, the Friendly Hour Club, the Garden Club, Wa-Tan-Ye, VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. She has been in failing health the past weeks and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gene McCollum Friday evening, March 23, 1979 at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 16 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Mayburn Ramsey and two infant sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Orla Peters, Manning; her daughter, Shirley, Mrs. Gene McCollum, near Manning; one grandson, Steven McCollum and his wife, Linda of Manning; three great grandchildren, Chad, Jeramy and Mandy. The following brothers and sisters: Juanita, Mrs. Hugo Boeck, Harlan, Iowa; Edward Ramsey, Manning; Ralph Ramsey, Manilla; Bernice, Mrs. Charles Laverty, Manning; Thelma, Mrs. Arlo Hodne, Manning; Orren Ramsey, Manning; Mary Ramsey, Manning; John Ramsey, Manning, as well as by many other relatives and friends.
The couple purchased a home when they moved to Manning, but sold it, and last year built a beautiful new bungalow type home in South Manning. Mr. Peters is employed by F.D. Ross and Co., here.
Church Work First
Although Mrs. Peters has her "finger in a good many pies," she has
always put her church work first. She is a past president of the Methodist
WSCS, and now serves as promotion secretary for that organization. She is also on the church's Commission on Worship.
Mr. Peters is very active in the church, also.
Edna Peters should be "six women" to get everything done that she manages to accomplish, her husband says.
At the present time, she is vice president of Emil Ewoldt Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary and is in charge of the current drive for funds for the Sister Kenny Foundation in Manning. For the past three years, she has been general chairman of the Red Cross Bloodmobile's trips to Manning, which were then sponsored by the Auxiliary.
Mrs. Peters is also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, and is a color bearer in that organization. She is a member of the Progressive Study Club and the Manning Garden Club and also works with the Women's Relief Corps. Once a month she attends the regular meeting of a rural club to which she has belonged for years, and also attends the club's special meetings and parties.
Like to Dance
Both the Peters love to square dance and are members of a square dance group
that dances each Wednesday. To round out her time, Edna is an assistant in the
DeBoth Florist shop in Manning, whenever Mrs. DeBoth needs help.
Mrs. Peters, daughter of Mrs. Bess Ramsey and the late Charles Ramsey of Manning, is a member of a large and well-known local family. She has five brothers and four sisters, all of whom live in Manning, or within a short driving-distance. The family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are a close-knit group and gets together often to celebrate birthdays, holidays and anniversaries.
Scarcely a weekend goes by that some of the family members don't meet. When birthdays are observed, dessert is always Angel Food Cake and the old family stand-by, "Chocolate Potato Cake."
The Peters have one daughter, Mrs. Eugene McCollum, who lives on the home farm with her husband and son, Steven.
Mrs. Peters likes to cook, but does little sewing or handiwork.
When she does find a tranquil minute or two in her busy days, she reads and watches a few TV programs.
