Edna Nordbye
Longtime Toledo resident Edna "Louise" Nordbye, 85, died May 6, 2001, at her home.

She was born June 18, 1915, in Manning, Iowa, to Dr. Orren and Edna (Smith) Wyatt. She lived in Toledo for 54 years.

She attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, for a year, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Home Economics from Iowa State University in 1937.

Mrs. Nordbye taught in Estherville, Iowa, Graettinger, Iowa, and Sioux City, Iowa. She worked for the Junket Co., as a product representative in Minneapolis and was an arts and crafts instructor for the Chicago Park District.

During World War II, she worked as a residential group organizer for the Federal Public Housing Authority in Norfolk, Virginia. After the war, she moved to Seattle, Washington, where she managed the hotel for the YWCA.

She married Paul E. Nordbye November 15, 1947, and they bought a farm in the Winlock-Toledo area. She worked for Winlock High School for five years, Toledo High School for seven years and retired from Monticello Junior High School in Longview after 15 years.

Her memberships included the Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority, the Orthopedic Guild of the Children's Hospital in Seattle, and SHEBA, a senior citizen health advocacy group.

She was a tutor with the Lewis County Literacy Council, president of the Lewis county Retired Teachers' Association and worked on the election board for many years.

She enjoyed her computerized knitting machine and was well known for her sweaters, blankets and dish cloths. An avid traveler, she visited all 50 states and numerous countries around the world.

Preceding her in death were her husband; a brother, Merlin Wyatt; and a sister, Vera Rinderhagen.

Survivors include a daughter, Meri Howard of Los Angeles; a brother, Lester Wyatt of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a sister, Clara Martens of Manning, Iowa; two grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Francis Mission Parish Hall in Toledo.
