ED STEEN

Funeral services for Ed Steen were held Tuesday, March 22, 1988, at 10:30 a.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. Pastor Randy Ross of First Presbyterian Church officiated the service with Judy Joens, vocalist, and Connie Siepker, organist. Interment was in Manning City Cemetery with Jack Lorenzen, Wilmer Ranniger, Lester Boyens, Alan Lorenzen, Dean Vollstedt and Robert Kruse serving as casketbearers. Honorary casketbearers were Emil Ress, Harry Jansen, Joe Sonksen, and Vernon Schmidt.

Ed, son of Henry and Rosa Ehlers Steen, was born October 19, 1903, near Manning, Iowa. He attended Manning schools and graduated from Manning High School in 1921.

After graduation he farmed with his brother, Grover. On February 9, 1927, Ed was united in marriage with Amanda Lorenzen at Denison, Iowa. They farmed until 1951 when they moved into Manning. After moving into town Ed worked for Mueller Furniture and George Peters, as well as painting on his own. During his retirement years, Ed enjoyed fishing, gardening, and woodworking. His wife, Amanda died on March 14, 1981.

Ed died suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday, March 18, 1988, at the Manning General Hospital emergency room at the age of 84 years, 4 months, and 28 days.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; by two brothers, Emil and Grover Steen; and by a sister, Ida, as a young girl.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Madonna and her husband, Bill Roberts, of Newton; by three granddaughters: Lynn Carter, of Des Moines; Karen Roberts, of West Des Moines; and Janet and her husband, Dean Nihart, of Johnston; by two great-grandsons, Matthew and Bryan Carter; by one sister, Mrs. Amanda Stoelk, of Manning; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
