DOUGLAS LYNK OPPERMAN
Memorial services were held for Douglas Lynk Opperman Wednesday, April 17, 1991 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Manning. Dr. Charles Curl officiated the service. Music was provided by JoAnn Karsten, organist and Judy Joens and Brian Joens, vocalists. Honorary casketbearers were the class of 1977.
Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of arrangements.
Douglas, son of George W. and May (Thomas) Opperman, was born October 10, 1958 in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended Manning schools, graduating from Manning High School in 1977. Following graduation Doug attended Iowa State University until 1982 where he received his Bachelor Degree in Ag Journalism, with an emphasis on photography. From 1983 until 1984 Doug was a photographer with the Alexandria Gazette, Alexandria, Virginia; from 1985 to 1986 he was a photographer with the Arlington Journal, Arlington, Virginia; and from 1986 to 1990 he was a photo editor with USA Today-Weekend, Washington, D.C. During his career Doug covered the White House, professional sports, and other important events in the Washington area. He was loved and respected by his friends and peers.
Doug was active in the church. He spent a good deal of time working with a breakaway group at the church at Crystal Springs, just north of Washington, D.C. This was a group of young people from the ghetto areas of D.C. who were involved with drugs or crime.
Doug moved to Prineville, Oregon in January 1991. He died there early Saturday morning, April 13, 1991 in a one vehicle accident near his home. He was 32 years, 6 months and 3 days of age.
Survivors include his parents, George and May Opperman, formerly of Manning and now of 2547 Florence Drive, Beloit, Wisconsin 53511; his sister, Mary and her husband, Neal Perry; of Prineville, Oregon; his triplet brothers, Don Opperman, of Kodiak, Alaska and Dave Opperman, of Des Moines; brothers, Tom Opperman and his wife, Michelle, of Des Moines; and Mike Opperman of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin; nieces and nephews: Brian, Melissa, and Katherine Opperman and Mariah and Micah Perry.
