Dorothy Elizabeth, daughter of John and Clara (Lechtenberg) Sextro, was born June 1, 1930, on the family farm near Manning, Iowa. She grew up on the farm as one of twelve children and attended rural school near her home and then graduated from Manning High School in 1949. She worked as a hired girl and at HR Cleaners in Carroll.
On October 6, 1953, Dorothy was united in marriage with Leon J. Masching at Sacred Heart Church in Manning by Reverend J.F. Achatz. Seven children were born to this union. The family farmed near Carroll and Glidden. In 1973 they moved to Carroll where Dorothy was primarily a home maker but also did housekeeping for other families.
She also was a substitute in the lunch program at Kuemper School. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and Holy Spirit Ladies Guild. Dorothy was a prayerful member of the Legion of Mary. Volunteering for St. Anthony Auxiliary, New Hope Village Store and rug making kept her busy in her retirement.
After the death of her husband in 1983 Dorothy lived in their home for a short time and then moved to an apartment. In her spare time Dorothy enjoyed card playing, fishing, being with her family and especially following her grandchildren's activities.
Dorothy was diagnosed with cancer in September of 2013. She died on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at St. Anthony Hospital, Carroll, IA at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 21 days.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Leon; sisters Edna Sextro, Maxine Meier and Helen Lampe (Joseph); brothers Herbert Sextro (Janet) and Edward Sextro.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Joyce Ferneding (James) of Manning; Linda Berger (Michael) of Arcadia; Diane Sturm (Daniel) of Carroll; Sandra Irlmeier (Kenneth) of Elk Horn; Donna Pemble (David) of Carroll; David Masching (Debra) of Grimes and Mary Trent (David) of Carroll; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings: Leo Sextro of Manning; Marie Sextro of Carroll; Leonard Sextro (Delores) of Manning; Norbert Sextro (Dora) of Surprise, Arizona; and Ruth Vanderheiden of Carroll and brother in law Warren Meier (Rose Mary) of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
