Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Dorothea Mergele, a resident of Manning since 1907, who passed away Saturday afternoon January 18, 1941, at her home, 818 Third Steet, after being confined to her bed about 10 weeks. She was 81 years, 4 months, and 18 days, of age. Dorothea Heesch was born on August 30, 1869, daughter of Henry Heesch and Maria (Fischer) Heesch, in Hitzhusen by Bromstedt in Holstein, Germany.
Mrs. Mergele came to the United States from Germany in November 1879, locating at Redwood Falls, Minnesota. On September 22, 1883, she was married to George Mergele at Beaver Falls, Minnesota.
In the year 1890, Mr. and Mrs. Mergele moved to Missouri and in 1889, they moved from Boliver, Polk County, Misssouri, to Carroll County on a farm seven miles north of Manning. Here Mr. Mergele passed away on May 23, 1903. In 1907, Mrs. Mergele moved to Manning and has since made her home here.
Mr. and Mrs. Mergele were the parents of six children, five of whom survive -Johann George Mergele, Danube, Minnesota; Mrs. H.H. Grundmeier (Anna), Carroll; August Mergele, Taconite, Minnesota; Anton Mergele of Manning and William Mergele of Marshalltown. One daughter, Marie passed away on July 6, 1883, at the age of 13 months.
Mrs. Mergele is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Christie Breitkruetz of Swift Current, Canada, and ten grandchildren.
She was a member of the Lutheran fellowship for many years. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Ohde Funeral Home with Rev. Alexander Wimerly, pastor of the Presbyterian Church officiating. A quartet composed of Clifford Manning Johnson, Herman Pahde, Emma (Mrs. Albert) Dietz, Martha (Mrs. Nick) Schrum offered the music.
Interment was in the Manning Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were John Schrum, Julius Wehrmann, Harold Grundmeier, Ralph Grundmeier, Orren Grundmeier, Russell Grundmeier.

Mrs. Dora Mergele, 81, died early Saturday afternoon at her home, 818
Third Street. She had been confined to bed for the last six weeks.
Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Ohde Funeral Home, with the Rev, Alexander Wimberly, ministries of the Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery, and pallbearers will be Harold, Russell, Ralph, and Orren Grundmeier of Carroll, Julius Wehrmann, and John Schrum of Manning. The Grundmeier brothers are Mrs. Mergele's grandsons. Music will be furnished by a quartet.
Mrs. Mergele had claimed three states as her home since coming to this country from Germany, her native land, in 1879. She was born Dora Heesch, daughter of Henry and Maria (Fischer) Heesch, at Hitzhuzen by Bromstedt, Holstein, Germany, August 30, 1859. Emigrating to Minnesota from Germany in November 1879, she located at Redwood Falls in that state.
She was married to George Mergele September 22, 1883, at Beaver Falls, Minnesota. In 1890, they left Minnesota to make their home in Missouri, where they lived for nine years. They came to Carroll County from Bolivar, Polk County, Missouri, in 1899. After farming five miles north of Manning, Mrs. Mergele moved into the town of Manning in 1907. Her husband had passed away two years earlier, his death occurring May 23, 1905.
Mrs. Mergele is survived by five children: Johann George Mergele, Danube, Minnesota; Mrs. H.H. Grundmeier (Anna), Carroll; August Mergele, Taconite, Minnesota; Anton Mergele and William Mergele, Manning. The son, George, is coming from Minnesota for the rites.
Mrs. Mergele is also survived by ten grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Christena Breitkreutz of Swift Current, Canada. She was one of a family of four children.
Mrs. Mergele was the mother of six children, one daughter, Marie, having died July 6, 1885, at the age of thirteen months.
She was a member of the Three-Quarter Century Club.
