Dethlef H. Martens

MANNING Funeral services for Dethlef H. Martens, 80, were held on Tuesday, July 5, 1960, at 2:00 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, with Pastor George B. Eschenbacher officiating. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery, with nephews as pallbearers.

Mr. Martens died at the Saunders Nursing Home in Denison on Saturday, July 2. He had been a patient there six weeks; and was in Manning General Hospital five weeks previous.

Son of Dethlef and Caroline Martens, he was born October 25, 1879, in Carroll County and educated in rural schools. On May 30, 1906, he married Amelia Vinke at Manning, the ceremony performed by Pastor Johann M. Ansorge of Zion Lutheran Church.

The couple lived in Crawford County several years, then moved to a Carroll County farm. Mrs. Martens died in March 1934. He continued to farm until 1941, when he moved to Manning. Mr. Martens lived in town for a year, then moved to a farm south of Manning, where he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Leora Popp for 18 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a son in infancy, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by two sons: Gilbert, Manilla; and Lewis, Inglewood, California; a daughter, Mrs. Leora Popp, Manning; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Henry and John Martens, Manning.


NOTE: On the headstone it is listed as Detlef (1879-1960) husband of Emilie (1886-1934)

Dethlef Martens is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
