Delbert Joyce, son of Dethlef and Metha (Joachimsen) Vinke, was born July 7, 1909, on the family farm in Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized December 18, 1910, and confirmed December 19, 1951 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Delbert attended rural school near his home through the eighth grade. He then attended Manning High School until the eleventh grade when he took over the heavy work on the farm due to his father's illness.
On November 28, 1934, Delbert was united in marriage with Odessa Genzen at Manning, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. Delbert and Odessa made their home near Manning, moving into Manning in 1955. Delbert held numerous positions in the Manning area, working at a service station, Dultmeyer Manufacturing, in building construction, the railroad and the Manning Creamery. He also worked for 14 years as custodian for Zion Lutheran Church before his retirement in 1979 at the age of 70.
Delbert was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a 35-year member of the Manning Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, taking care of his car, and spending time with Odessa at their cabin at Blackhawk Lake.
In January of 2000, Delbert entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home after he broke his hip. His health began to fail in September and on Wednesday, October 4, 2000, Delbert died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa. He was 91 years, 2 months and 27 days of age.
Besides his parents, Delbert was preceded in death by two daughters Shirley Schwieso and Sandra Lisec, two grandsons Roger Duane Schwieso Jr. and Jerrad Lisec, and two brothers Ralph and Averill Vinke.
