Mr. "B" was born with his identical triplet brothers, Mr.
"A" and Mr. "C" on October 10, 1958, at the Florence Crittenton
Home in Sioux City, Iowa. The healthy boys were born three minutes apart. Dave
weighed 3 lb., 3 oz. while his brothers weighed 3 lb., 4 oz.
One month later they were adopted by May and George Opperman of Manning, Iowa,
making them the first adopted triplets on record. They joined a sister, Mary
and a brother, Tom, ages 4 and 2, respectively, who were also adopted from the
same home. The triplets were given the names Donald, David, and Douglas.
Dave attended Manning Community Schools and graduated from Manning High School in 1977. He was very active in school activities which include being president/vice president of student council, band (drums), choir (3 octaves), school newspaper/year book, drama, speech, football, and FFA. Dave was a long-time participant in 4-H and Manning swim team.
In 1976, he became the first AFS American abroad student from Manning and spent May through August in Arnessysla and Borg, Iceland.
Dave attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and graduated with a BA in speech and radio/TV with a minor in marketing. Upon graduating in 1981, he accepted a political cartooning job at the Sacramento Union newspaper in California. Upon arrival, there was a hiring freeze. Dave then took a job with a landscape architect and one of his designs was featured on the cover of Architectural Digest. He also moonlighted as a stand-up comedian.
An opportunity arose to move to Los Angeles, which was his goal for most of his life. Dave got a job at the Beverly Center where he worked his way up from janitor to engineer II, to assistant marketing director. During this time, he met a lot of famous actors, musicians, comedians, sports figures, and writers. Dave also worked on the welcoming committee for the 1984 Olympics.
Still moonlighting and honing his comedic skills, Dave was accepted by the LA Connection Improv Troupe on his first audition. This was an atmosphere that he excelled in and had great fun. They specialized in removing the soundtrack of movies and dubbing their own comedic twist in front of a live audience. This eventually evolved into a cult favorite TV show, Mystery Science Theater 3000. Dave left the troupe to concentrate on stand-up comedy right before they signed with Nickelodeon. He then performed at the Improv on Melrose opening for big-name stars. Dave continued doing this for another decade. He was also an editor for Laugh Magazine.
Dave returned to the Midwest with a quick stay in Chicago. The love of his home state brought him back to Iowa. He worked as the advertising manager at the Indianola Record Herald newspaper, as well as writing a few columns and cartooning. His next move was to Des Moines where Dave worked for WHO- TV, KCCI, and WOI. Even though he was a news junkie, he hung up his headphones shortly after the Oklahoma City bombing.
Fort Collins, Colorado, was Dave's next stop where he worked as an arborist assistant and lumberjack. Dave then worked for the city of Fort Collins, Colorado, in landscape maintenance.
Iowa lured him back as well as a lady named, Cynthia, and he moved to Lansing, Iowa. Cynthia Curlile and Dave were married on a boat on the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, on October 10, 2010 (10/10/10, his birthday).
Shortly after that, Dave was diagnosed with IGA nephropathy stage 4 kidney disease. In 2012, Dave moved to Iowa City, Iowa, to be closer to the specialists at the University of Iowa hospital and clinics. In January, 2016, Dave was diagnosed with terminal inoperable pancreatic cancer and then lung cancer.
Dave enjoyed hiking, camping, canoeing, travel, art, film, music, fishing, restoring classic cars and trucks and his number one love, sports. He traveled extensively and was an accomplished artist. Being at Kinnick Stadium on Saturdays with his friends watching the Iowa Hawkeyes was one of his favorite activities.
Dave is survived by his wife Cynthia of Clarinda, Iowa; his mother May Opperman of Beloit Wisconsin; his sister Mary Opperman of Prineville, Oregon; his brothers, Tom Opperman (Rose) of Norwalk, Iowa; Don Opperman of Bellevue, Washington; Mike Opperman (Kelly) of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin; and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a daughter, Erica Marie Rund, a granddaughter, Riley May Jones both of Des Moines, Iowa; and Erica's Mother, Jeanette Ptasnik Vaquerano, of Clive, Iowa.
