Clifford Romey, 90, of Templeton, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 4, 2012, at Carroll Health Center Nursing Home.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton. Celebrant will be Father Steve Broderson. Mass servers will be Clifford's granddaughters Erin McNamara and Jennifer Romey.

Music will be by Jeanne Kerkhoff, the Sacred Heart Men's Choir with Clifford's daughter-in-law, Tricia Romey as soloist. Lectors will be Clifford's grandchildren Andy Romey and Laura Adamson. Gift bearers will be Clifford's grandchildren Molly Romey, Ryan McNamara, Quinn McNamara, Melissa Henderson, and Clifford's great-granddaughter Hanna Wiskus.

Eucharistic minister will be Clifford's daughter-in-law Terry Romey. Casketbearers will be Clifford's grandchildren Amanda Wiskus, Mike Romey, Ashlen Romey, Emily McNamara, Shane McNamara, and Matt Romey. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton with military honors conducted by the Manning VFW.

Friends may call at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:30 p.m. Sunday. There will be a rosary at 5 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. by Sacred Heart Parish. The casket will be moved to Sacred Heart Church at 9 a.m. Monday when visitation will resume.

Born December 20, 1921, in Audubon County, Clifford was a son of Nicholas and Matilda (Stangl) Romey. He spent most of his lifetime in the Templeton area and attended Sacred Heart School. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was one of the first active servicemen in the Construction Battalion (SeaBees). Clifford served in Australia with stops in Borneo, New Guinea, Sumatra, and ending in the Palawan Islands in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Upon returning from the military he married Beatrice Schwaller on January 18, 1947, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. They made their home in Templeton where they raised their six children. While working in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Springbrook State Park in Guthrie County he acquired his skill as a brick mason and continued working with his father-in-law John Schwaller in Templeton. Cliff worked for various construction companies in the area throughout the years and finished his active career with Badding Construction in Carroll while continuing as a self-employed bricklayer doing local specialty masonry jobs.

He enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with his family and was proud of his grandson being the first third-generation Navy SeaBee in its history. Cliff was a member of the Manning VFW and Sacred Heart Church in Templeton.

Survivors include his children, Alice Henderson of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Randy Romey of Templeton, Nick Romey and his wife Terry of Templeton, Russell Romey and his wife Tricia of Granger, Indiana, Stan Romey and his wife Lorraine of Templeton, and Rose McNamara of Templeton; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Elaine Schwaller of Templeton and Madeline "Midge" Hoffman of Carroll; his brother-in-law, Zell Millard of Woodbine; as well as other extended relatives.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Bea, in January 1995; one brother, Melvin "Bud" Romey; and one sister, Marie Millard.
