LONG TIME RESIDENT PASSES AWAY
Was Resident of this Community Since 1879.

Miss Clara Parker, whose funeral was held at the Methodist church last Monday afternoon at two o'clock, was one of the long time residents of this community.

Her father, John Parker, one of the pioneers, bought and settled on the Northwest quarter of Section Sixteen, Warren township, a part of which is now in the corporate limits of Manning, in February 1879, two and one-half years before Manning came into existence. Mr. Parker died on this farm December 17, 1914, the mother having preceded him several years.

Clara was " born in Dixon, Illinois, July 7, 1870, so was not quite nine years old when her parents settled here.

The first term of school in Manning began November 20, 1881, with B. I. Salinger as teacher. She was one of the 61 pupils, and in a report published March 16, 1882, was one of nine credited with being neither absent nor tardy. She graduated from Manning High School in 1890 and taught school several years. Her graduating class numbered sixteen, and now Angie Kenyon Parrott is the only one of the class living here.

In 1901, the Parker sisters, Jennie, Minnie and Clara, took over the management of the farm and this partnership has existed until now. While her health permitted she looked after the household duties, and the other sisters gave attention to the farm and business matters.

For a number of years her health has been precarious. Her affliction gradually affected her vision, resulting in total blindness for the past six or eight months. Yet this bodily suffering and perpetual darkness wrought no change in her disposition, always meeting her friends and acquaintances with a pleasant word and without complaint.
Now this business partnership of sixteen years has by providence been dissolved, and the life associations brought to a close.
