CHRIS SCHMIDT

Funeral services for Chris Schmidt were held Saturday, June 24, 1989, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the service, with Jennifer Riggert as organist. Interment was in the Manning City Cemetery with Harold Schmidt, Larry Schmidt, Dale Lenz, Louis Puck, Doug Burright, and Les Boger serving as casketbearers.

Christian Nels, son of Johannes and Helena (Wiese) Schmidt, was born May 5, 1902, near Manning, Iowa. He attended school near his home.

Chris farmed with his dad until the family moved to Manning in 1935. Chris was a carpenter for a short time and then started his own trucking business. He hauled livestock and gravel until retiring in the 1970s. Chris was a member of the Manning Fire Department and Ak-Sar-Ben, as well as the Zion Lutheran Church.

Due to failing health Chris moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home on January 26, 1981. He died there on Wednesday noon, June 21, 1989, at the age of 87 years, 1 month, and 16 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by the following brothers and sisters: Hannas; Henry; Rosie, Mrs. Albert A. Puck, on May 20, 1982; Emil, on January 23, 1989; and Helen, Mrs. Edwin Grimm, on May 20, 1989.

Chris is survived by his sister-in-law, Ida Schmidt, of Westside; by nine nieces; by seven nephews; by great-nieces and nephews; and by a cousin.
