Chris Moeller - train accident
Charles "Pits" Gruhn train accident
A Very sad Accident
One of the most shocking accidents happened Monday evening, After the Charivari of Henry
Brunnier a number of the boys followed them to the C. M. & St. P. depot throwing rice,
etc., and when the train pulled in and before it stopped Chris Moeller made a run to jump on
the train for a ride which had been his custom with some more of the boys before, and some
way, no one knows how, his foot slipped and he fell under the car and no doubt the wheel ran
over his leg between the ankle and knee slivering the bone upward so it became necessary
to amputate the limb at once above the knee, and he did not know his limb was gone until he
woke up next morning. He is resting as well as could be expected. His mother came from
Omaha Tuesday evening and will remain with him for several days at the Buchheit
Restaurant where he will get the best of care. This should be another lesson to young boys
attempting to board trains while they are in motion as this is the second case we have had
of this kind as you will remember poor little Charles "Pits" Gruhn only a few years ago had
the same experience. It seems terrible to see a young man with bright prospects cut down
like this and unless he can at once get a good education and get a position as bookkeeper
or something of this kind his future will not be of the brightest. Boys are altogether too
careless about trying to jump on and off of trains as it is only a question of time when you
get caught and then repent at your leisure. But steps will be taken at once and arrests will
follow if boys don't stop practicing this kind of folly. This is a step in the right direction. The
railroad companies are getting tired of being censured for so many accidents. So now boys
take warning and don't attempt it any more because you will be dealt with severely. However
we sincerely hope Chris will get on all right as he should have many years before him yet
and we hope to see him prosper even though be does have to wear an artificial limb.
