Chauncey Whitcher
Death of Chauncey Whitcher.
Sudden death has again taken one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Holland, New York. Mr.
Chauncey Whitcher passed out of this life early on Friday morning, October 9th, after a brief
illness. Mr. Whitcher came from Old New England stock and the proverbial New England
thrift was characteristic of his life.
He was born on West Hill, in the town of Holland, June 29th, 1826, and thus was in the 83rd year of his age when he died. With the exception of less than a year spent in the town of Sardinia he has been a resident of this community, where he was widely known and held in high esteem. Of his four brothers, only one, William, of Ashtabula, Ohio, survives. Two sons, Selden E., of Gonzales, California, and Charles F., of Arizona, and one daughter Mrs. George Wood, of Holland, besides ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, remain to mourn his loss. His granddaughter, Flora, who has made her home with her grandparents for the past twenty years, faithfully ministered to his every comfort. The funeral was held at the home on Tuesday, October 13th, the Reverend Charles H. Oliver of the Baptist Church officiating. The burial was in the local cemetery.
The above notice was sent to us by Miss Flora Whitcher, of Holland, N.Y. The deceased is the father of Captain S.E. Whitcher, who is well known here, but who now is in California.
