C.E. Schmidt of Manning Called In Death Today
Charles Edward Schmidt, well-known Manning resident, succumbed at his home here this morning, January 12, 1943, death claiming him at the age of seventy-seven years. His death was caused by a stroke which he suffered Sunday morning while at the Frank Stoelk farm near Manning.

Mr. Schmidt, who was retired, had formerly been in the furniture business here. He had also done carpenter work.

The body is at the Ohde Funeral Home, awaiting completion of funeral arrangements.

Last Rites for Manning Man to Be on Thursday
Charles Schmidt Will Be Buried in Cemetery at Manning

Funeral services for Charles E. Schmidt, Manning pioneer, who died Tuesday morning from the effects of a stroke suffered Sunday morning, are to be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Ohde Funeral Home. The Rev. David MacDougall, minister of the Methodist Church, will officiate. The Masonic service will be given.

Clifford M. Johnson will be the vocal soloist, with Bonita (Mrs. Henry W.) Hagedorn, as his accompanist.

Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers, all of whom are nephews, are Alfred Fiala of Council Bluffs, Henry Hoft and Stephen Hoft of Wall Lake, Raymond Ehlers, Fred Ehlers, and Grover Steen.

Mr. Schmidt had been a resident of Manning since the town was started in 1881. He was born June 26, 1865, at Wheatland, Clinton County, Iowa, a son of John and Anna (Lenz) Schmidt, who were natives of Germany. In 1867, his parents brought their family to Crawford County.

Mr. Schmidt, a carpenter by trade, was the only man left in Manning who worked on the erection of the first buildings here. At that time, he lived with Henry Huesman one and one-half miles north of Manning, as the town was not yet in existence. He had followed the carpenter trade until his retirement about two years ago.

In the early 1890s, Mr. Schmidt was in the furniture business here.

He had also been in the mercantile business at Shelby and Dedham.

In 1888, Mr. Schmidt was married at Wall Lake to Miss Louise Hoft, who passed away at Manning in 1894. They were the parents of two children, Miss Verna Schmidt, who is principal of Central High School at Ames, and Karl, who died in 1937.

In 1899, Mr. Schmidt was married to Miss Bertha Ehlers of Manning, who survives.

Additional to his wife and his daughter, Verna, Mr. Schmidt leaves two brothers and two sisters: John Schmidt, Manning, Frank Schmidt, who is in Oregon; Mrs. William Behrens (Minnie) Lamberton, Minnesota, who is his twin sister, and Mrs. Alfred Fiala (Clara), Council Bluffs.

Two brothers and one sister William and Louis Schmidt and Mrs. Joseph Arp (Mathilda), preceded him in death.

Mr. Schmidt was a longtime member of Manual Lodge No. 450 A.F. & A.M., in which he was actively interested. He belonged to the Daily Times Herald Three Quarter Century Club.

Mr. Schmidt had also belonged to the Modern Woodmen, the Knights of Pythias, and the Odd Fellows.
