Charles Edward, son of John and Louise (Kruse) Nissen, was born June 12, 1903, near Botna, Iowa. Charles attended school in the Botna area.

On September 11, 1929, Charles was united in marriage with Viola Caroline Schwartz in Manilla, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. They farmed south of Aspinwall for 7 years and then moved to a farm north of Aspinwall where they lived for 35 years before retiring in Manning in 1969. Charles enjoyed raising purebred spotted hogs for over 40 years. Viola died November 8, 1982. Charles was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and enjoyed shooting pool, watching television and fishing.

On July 7, 1998, Charles died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, following a brief illness. He reached the age of 95 years and 27 days.

Besides his parents and wife, Charles was preceded in death by a son Allen Nissen in 1988; three sisters: Alma Schroeder, Minnie Nissen, and Rose Gordon; four brothers: Ernest, George, Alfred, and Jack Nissen.

Charles is survived by three children: Stanley Nissen and his wife Mildred of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Lois Tegels of Fremont, Nebraska; Ronald Nissen and his wife Donna of Kansas City, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
