Brenda Jo, daughter of Stan and Joleen (Anthony) Spies, was born June 8, 1966, in Denison, Iowa. She grew up near Manilla and attended Manilla schools, graduating with the Class of 1984. The next year she attended nursing classes at Iowa Western Community College and became an LPN.

On October 12, 1985, Brenda was united in marriage with John Patrick McClatchey at Denison. The next year they moved to Phillipsburg, Germany, where her husband was stationed with the military. When they returned to the United States in 1988, they settled near Iowa City and then after two years moved to West Branch. While living in West Branch, she attended Kirkwood Community College studying nursing/business administration and worked as a doctor's assistant at several clinics, including North Corridor Internal Medicine in Coralville. As a result of a business opportunity for her husband, they moved to Monmouth, OR, in 1999 where she worked as a clinic nurse for Dr. McGee, OB/GYN. Two years later they settled in Independence, OR, where she was a clinic nurse for Salem Clinic-Inland Shores.

Brenda was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and was currently a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Monmouth, Oregon. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, knitting and yard work.

Brenda was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, however she continued to work until June 2006 when her health would no longer allow it. She was able to remain in her home in Independence, Oregon, with the support of her husband, family and hospice. Brenda died there on Wednesday evening, October 25, 2006, at the age of 40 years, 4 months, and 17 days.

Preceding her in death are her grandparents Alfred and Margaret Spies and Lewis and Elsie Anthony; Aunt Mildred Spies and cousin Rick Spies.

Brenda is survived by her husband John McClatchey of Independence, Oregon; parents Stan and Joleen Spies of Manilla; brother Brent Spies and wife Carol of Manilla; sister Bricy and husband Mike Lorenzen of Manilla; four nieces: Melanie and husband Shayne Schiltz, Jennifer Spies, Jessica Spies, LeAnn Lorenzen; nephew Zach Lorenzen; mother-in-law Mary Lou McClatchey of Haraha, Oklahoma; many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
