C.W. "Bill" Steneker

Memorial services for C. W. "Bill" Steneker, 83, of Mason City, Iowa, were held Monday, June 15, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Mason City, Iowa. Reverend John Hill officiated the service with private family committal services to be held at a later date at the Evangelic Cemetery in Donnellson, Iowa. Memorials are to be made to the North Iowa Area Community College Scholarship Fund or the First Presbyterian Church.

Bill was born January 27, 1915 in Donnellson, Iowa, the son. of Dr. George W. and Mabel (Schreiner) Steneker. He graduated from Donnellson High School in 1932, where he excelled in athletics. He then attended and graduated from Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa, in 1936. While at Parsons, he would receive nine letters in football, basketball and track and in 1936 was selected to the All-Iowa Conference Basketball Team. After graduating, Bill taught and coached at Afton, Iowa, for four years.

Bill married Virginia Steed on May 30, 1939, at Fairfield. In 1940, Bill moved on to Manning, Iowa, where he continued to have success coaching and teaching for eleven years.

Bill moved to Mason City in 1951, where once again he would enjoy success. He taught for twenty-seven years in Mason City retiring in 1978. Bill received his Masters degree from Drake University in 1961 and was inducted into the coaches Hall of Fame in 1978.

Following Bill's retirement, he sold real estate for the Busch Agency-Better Homes and Garden. Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Benevolence Masonic Lodge #145 A.F. & A.M., High 12, Elks Lodge, Evening Lions, Senior Chamber, N.S.E.A. and a life member of I.S.E.A.

He was preceded in death by his father, step-father, mother and daughter.
Bill is survived by his wife Virginia, of Mason City; daughter Suzanne McRoberts, of St. Louis Missouri; five grandchildren Vicki, Bill, Christy, Cherie and Mandy; three great-grandchildren Lauren, Brandon and Billy.
