Mrs. Bertha Mae Spear, 83, of Manning died Wednesday morning, August 19, 1970, at Manning General Hospital, after undergoing surgery on Tuesday. She had been in good health until entering the hospital a week ago.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ohde Funeral Home, Manning. The Rev. Andrew Stewart-Morris, pastor of the Methodist Church, will officiate; burial will be in the Manning Cemetery. Friends may call at Ohde Funeral Home after 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Mrs. Spear was born July 20, 1887, near Irwin, a daughter of Frederick and Agnes (Hamilton) Silverwood. She attended rural school near her home and graduated in 1906 from Irwin High School, after which she taught school for several years. Her marriage to James Spear took place on December 22, 1909, and they lived in South Dakota for about a year before returning to this area to farm near Botna. In 1949, they retired and moved to Manning. She continued to live here following her husband's death, on January 25, 1952.
Mrs. Spear is survived by two daughters, Lillian Spear, at home, and Mrs. Milford (Leola) Spear, Botna; two grandchildren, Donald Gray of Reedsport, Oregon; and Loyce Gray, who has been living here with her grandmother; two great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Lilian Armentrout of Irwin.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter and two infant sisters.
