BERNICE NIELSEN
Bernice, daughter of Adolph and Anna (Klindt) Paulsen, was born March 11, 1912, at Manning, Iowa. She attended Manning schools. On February 23, 1933, Bernice was united in marriage with Claus Nielsen at the Lutheran Church in Manning. She helped her mother in the Club Cafe and later worked for Alvin W. Martens in The Dime Store for many years. Even though Bernice's primary activity was being a homemaker, she loved to garden and was an avid sports fan.

Bernice was a member of the United Methodist Church and its Martha Circle as well as the Royal Neighbors of America. Bernice received an award for volunteer of the year in recognition of her volunteer activities with the Manning Senior Citizen Center, Congregate Meals, Hospital Auxiliary and the many hours she volunteered at the Plaza.

Bernice died suddenly and unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack the Saturday preceding her death. She died on Monday, November 15, 1993, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 4 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1992; and her brother, Vinton Paulsen.

Survivors include her children: Roger Nielsen and his wife, Barbara, of Denison; Beverly and her husband, Gary Smith, of East Moline, Illinois; and Larry Nielsen and his wife, Pat, of Barrington, Rhode Island; six grandchildren: Kim Mitchell Halboth, Chris Mitchell, Jeff Nielsen, Scott Nielsen, Jennifer Nielsen, and Mark Nielsen; five great-grandchildren: Brandi Jo Mitchell, Heather Wannamaker, Brooke Nielsen, Morgan Nielsen, and Megan Nielsen; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
