Barney Elmer Neubaum

Bernhard "Barney" Neubaum, son of August Neubaum and Louise (Rothe) Neubaum was born January 16, 1909, in Hanover township, Crawford county. He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St. Matthew Lutheran church in Mapleton.

He was married to Ella Stier on October 12, 1929. After their marriage they lived in Mapleton, Schleswig, and Manning. Two years ago they returned to Schleswig where he was connected with the lumber business.

He had been in poor health for the past eight months and was hospitalized at various times. He was taken to the Denison hospital Sunday and died on Monday, April 27, 1970.

He is survived by his wife, Ella; two daughters, Mrs. LaJune Smith of Las Cruces, NM, Mrs. Donna Joens of Council Bluffs, and two sons, Robert of Schleswig and Gary of Nashville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; five brothers, Marvin and August "Bud" of Denison, Arthur of Modesto, CA, Edgar of Oakdale, CA and Ernst of Havelock, NC, a sister, Mrs. LaVerna Graybill of Escalon, CA.

A sister, Ada, preceded him in death.

His funeral service was held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig on April 30 with the Reverend Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt served as organist and accompanied the ladies' choir as they sang, "Heaven is My Home" and "Rock of Ages."

Pallbearers were Lyle Marquardt, Douglas Neubaum, Bob Harkins, Glen Bielfeldt, Vernon Stockfeldt, and Frank Sisson.
Interment was made in the Crawford Heights Memorial Garden Cemetery. Maxwell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
