Averill Vinke
Funeral services for Averill Vinke were held Tuesday, November 2, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Arcadia, Iowa. Pastor Carl L. Noble officiated the service with Fern Jensen as organist. Interment was held in Manning City Cemetery with Leon Schulte, Gary Schulte, Dennis Backhaus, Merlin Brockman, Harold McLaughlin, and Jack Weighton as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Robert Georgius, Jerry Conlin and Roger Georgius.
Averill Oren, son of Dethlef and Metha (Joachimsen) Vinke, was born January 1, 1914, at Hayes Township No. 8 in Crawford County, Iowa. Averill attended country school through the eighth grade and Manning High School for two years. Following his schooling, he worked for area farmers.
On March 10, 1938, Averill was united in marriage with Hilda Jansen at the Lutheran Church in Denison. Four children were born to this union. Averill and Hilda farmed near Botna, Manilla, Gray and then Westside. In 1977, they stopped farming, but stayed on the farm near Westside until retiring to Denison in 1992. Averill was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, and a lifetime member of the Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening and watching car racing.
Due to failing health, Averill entered the Carroll Health Center in Carroll, Iowa on May 30, 1996. He died there Friday, October 29, 1999, reaching the age of 85 years, 9 months and 28 days.
Besides his parents, Averill is preceded in death by a son, Dennis, in-infancy, and a brother Ralph Vinke.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda Vinke, of Denison; two sons: Adrain Vinke and his wife, Joan, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Gerald Vinke and his wife, Michele, of Morehead City, North Carolina; a daughter, Jeanine Vinke of Denison; four grandsons: David Vinke and his wife, Rachel, of Ferndale, Washington; Douglas
Vinke and his wife, Michelle, of Lawrence, Kansas; Brent Vinke and his wife, Samantha, of Groton, Connecticut; Bradley Vinke and his wife, Ashlie, of Pensacola, Florida; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother Delbert Vinke and his wife, Odessa, of Manning; two sisters: Lois and her husband, Floyd Drake, of Audubon; Laverne and her husband, Pete Petersen, of Mason City; three sisters-in-law: Clariss and her husband, Alvin Jansen, of Aspinwall; Irene Jansen and Loretta Vinke, both of Manning; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
