People of Manning and vicinity were greatly grieved Friday morning when the sad news was spread that Mrs. Adam Stang had suddenly passed away at about 3:00 o'clock that morning. Mrs. Stang had not been feeling well for some time but had not been seriously ill and was able to be up and around most of the time. Thursday, the day before her death, she was not so well and a specialist was called who discovered nothing serious. She retired as usual, apparently feeling well and falling to sleep. She quietly and peacefully passed away Friday morning, May 25, at the age of 69 years and 6 days.
Augusta Maria Nieland was born May 19, 1859, in Clayton county, Iowa, where she spent her childhood days, was educated and grew to womanhood. February 19, 1879, she was united in holy wedlock with Adam Stang to which union 10 children were born, of which two preceded the mother in death. Arthur died in the world war while in the service of his country.
Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Stang Came to Carroll county and purchased a large farm in the vicinity of Halbur, or about seven miles northeast of Manning, where they lived and toiled until March 1920, when they retired and came to Manning, where they purchased their beautiful home on Center street, north of the Methodist church. A few months later, in May, when they were barely settled in their new home, the husband and father was called to his reward, leaving a vacant chair in the happy home. When the war broke out, their son Arthur followed the colors and gave this life for his country. The remains were brought back to Manning and buried with military honors in the Manning cemetery.
The deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of this community, gaining a wide acquaintance through her noble character, pleasing manner and lending a helping hand to neighbors whenever needed. She early identified herself with the best interest of the community, The greater share of her life was spent in this community. She has known the joys and sorrows of this community, its traditions, its material and spiritual growth. Here her home has been, her family reared, her busy life has been spent, her faithful service rendered. She was faithful and loving as a wife, devoted and self-sacrificing as a mother; kind, charitable and helpful as a neighbor, consistent and willing as a Christian worker. Her thoughts were constantly of her family. Her faith in God was supreme. Her last hours were perfectly consistent with her faith. She was gone to her reward.
