August Werder

August Werder was born in Hanover, Germany, January 21, 1853, and at the age of two years, came to America with his parents. In 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Wittrock. To this happy union five children were born, three of whom preceded their father to that other world. August died March 28, 1920. He leaved to mourn his dismiss, his wife, two children, Margaret (Mrs. Joseph) Herbers near Halbur, and Harry Werder of Washington D.C. The deceased is one of Carroll County's oldest settlers. He has lived in Manning and Halbur for many years and had many intimate friends. The past 20 years he has made his home near Halbur.

Additional notes: August was a musician and at the early age of five played a double-bass violin in his father's band. He also played the violin.

After August and Katherine were married they settled in Clarence, Iowa where he was a post-master and proprietor of a general merchandise store. He was a Republican and when the Democratic president took office he lost his post-master position.

In 1890 he and his wife moved to Carroll County.
