On Wednesday, March 20, the Death Angel visited the August Schroeder home and took his soul to a place prepared above the soul of a man who had lived this life in honesty, sincerity and happiness among his family and his friends. Few are those who spent a life as useful and dutiful, in the real sense of neighborliness and friendliness as our departed friend. An open hand and heart to those in need, and his council was just and striking.
On Tuesday morning the day previous to his demise, he complained of not feeling well, and at noon he became seriously ill, at which time he suffered a paralytic stroke. He was immediately rushed to the St. Anthony hospital in Carroll, where medical skill and best of care and loving hands could give him, was supplied but to no avail. He quietly passed away Wednesday morning, March 20, 1935, at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 25 days.
August Schroeder was born on April 23, 1860, at Schleswig, Germany and came to the United States with his parents in 1866. They settled in Clinton County, Iowa, where he received his education and grew to manhood. At the age of 23 years he ventured westward and came to Carroll County, engaging in farm work.
On June 3rd, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Carolina Tank, to which union 10 children were born, all of whom survive besides the bereaved wife and mother. They are Clara, Mrs. Carl Petersen of Westside; Willie of Manning; Harry of Westside; Albert of Manning; George of Westside; Hilda, Mrs. Albert Karsten of Arcadia; Herbert of Manilla and Lolida, Mrs. Edwin Wegner of Manning.
