August Reinhold, born in Germany, December 18, 1881, died September 30 at Ten Sleep, Wyoming. He was a son of Sophia (Lutt) Reinhold, who passed away September 19, 1932, and John P. Reinhold, who died February 1, 1928, both at their residence in Manning.
Mr. Reinhold came to America with his parents in 1885 when he was three years old. The family lived at Aspinwall until 1881 when they moved to a farm about a half mile west of Manning. They lived on this farm until 1890 when they came to Manning. After a short residence here, they returned to farming, moving back to Manning in 1908. The Center Street home has been the family residence since that time.
Mr. Reinhold attended the Manning Schools, after which he taught a rural school two miles west of Manning. Later, he attended the Northwestern University School of Pharmacy, Chicago, from which he graduated in 1903. For a few years he worked in drug stores in Chicago. In 1905, he came back to Manning and purchased the interest of the late Herman Grau in the drug firm of Lewis and Grau.
SINCE that time the firm has been known as the Lewis-Reinhold Drug Company, which name it still has, though both of the original owners have retired and sold their interests to Arthur Rix, Dr. William H. Fink, and Orval Fink.
Mr. Reinhold was connected with this firm for 41 years. He retired January 1 of this year.
Mr. Reinhold was a leader in many important community activities. Especially interested in sports, he won a gold medal for pole vault at Northwestern University. He was active in the work of Manning's Fire Department running team. He took part in the team's activities as a runner and was manager of the championship team which set the world's unequalled record. He was instrumental in establishing the golf course here, the Manning-Manilla Country Club.
Another of his hobbies was hunting. He had won many marksman trophies.
HE HAD made three trips to the east since 1910 and had spent half of last year in the west. He and his brother had started a few days before his death on a trip which was planned to cover the only five states that the brothers had not visited. He died while attempting to change a tire on his car on a mountain read in Wyoming. It is believed that the altitude contributed to the cause of death.
Mr. Reinhold was active in the building and improvement of the community. He was a member of Manning and Hayes Township Schuetzen Vereins. He was a member of the committee which built the Schuetzen hall, now known as Firemen's hall, here. He was also active in the work of the Three Mile and Five Mile houses.
He is perhaps best known as a huge supporter of Manning's famous Children's Day, which was begun first under the Schuetzen Verein and in later years has been managed by Manning merchants. He has acted as secretary since the beginning and each year kept a record of the score of every boy and girl entered in the contests.
Only this year, last June, he hurried through a western trip to be in Manning to officiate at the annual event.
He was a member of the Manning Country club, the Elks Lodge at Atlantic and the Manning Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by two brothers, Louis of Long Beach, California, and William of Manning. Two nieces and a nephew also survive; Mrs. C.A. Stipe of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mrs. R.E. Lowe of Long Beach, California, and John D. Reinhold of Des Moines. A brother, John, preceded him in death three years ago at Audubon.
