Last Rites Held for August Meyer
Manning Monitor, December 10, 1936

August Meyer was born June 7, 1845 in Wendenhof, in the Province of Hannover, Germany, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He spent his youthful days, and was educated in his native country. At the age of 21 he came to America, settling near Beecher, Illinois, where he lived for some years. There he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Wollenberg in 1875 with whom he lived for ten years. This union was blessed with 2 sons and 3 daughters. Both sons and one daughter preceeded their father in death. In 1877 the family moved to Iowa, living on a farm east of Templeton.

In 1886 Mrs. Meyer died suddenly while on a trip to Illinois.
In 1887 Mr. Meyer married Catherine Ketelsen, with whom he lived for over 48 years. To this union three children were born.
In 1900 the family moved to Lincoln Township, Audubon County and lived there until 1916 when they moved to Manning, occupying their present home on Ann St.

Mr. Meyer was blessed by God with remarkable health and vigor. He was always in good health until about four weeks ago, when his heart began to cause serious trouble. During these weeks his suffering was intense, but he found great comfort in God's promises, and was filled with the desire to depart and be with Christ. Last Tuesday morning, the Lord granted his request and called him home at the age of 91 years, 5 months, and 24 days.

He is mourned by his widow, Mrs. Meyer, one son, Ernest Meyer of Omaha, Nebraska; four daughters, Mrs. Emma Bald of Gray, Iowa; Mrs. Elizabeth Ross of Manning, Iowa; Mrs. Marie Starck of Aurora, Illinois; and Mrs. Louise Berlin of Hobart, Indiana; one sister, Mrs. Mary Schrum of Templeton; 20 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 3rd at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon at the Lutheran Church, Pastor John M. Ansorge, officiating.

Internment was made in the Manning Cemetery and many were the friends who were present to pay their last respects to their departed friend. Pallbearers were three nephews and three grandchildren: George Schrum, Walter Ullerich, Carl Borkowski, Jr., Fred Bald, John Barten, Jr., and Eugene Starck.

Mr. Meyer was one of our most respected citizens, having pioneered here and leaves many memories and some heritages which will endure throughout Manning's history. He was a man of pleasing personality, jovial, kind and honorable. He was a good friend to have, and he had many. He was a faithful husband and a kind father in his home and gave himself unselfishly and lovingly for comforts and good of his family. We offer our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

August Meyer is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
