Arnold Bernhard, son of John and Minnie (Steen) Sonksen, was born February 27, 1906, on a farm north of Manning in Carroll County, Iowa. Arnold attended school in Manning and as a young man he was an iron worker for Dultmeier Manufacturing Company.

On June 14, 1930, Arnold was united in marriage with Gladys Sophie Ohrt by Pastor Ansorge at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. The following spring Arnold and Gladys moved to Gladys' parents' farm near Botna and subsequently farmed that location for 39 years. After retiring in 1969 they lived in Harlan for 23 years before coming to reside at the Manning Plaza in 1994. In 2000 Arnold and Gladys celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Arnold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Throughout the years he enjoyed farming, fishing, woodworking, and especially going on Sunday afternoon car rides with Gladys.

Arnold had been in poor health since last December and on November 21, 2000, he entered Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning where he died Wednesday, December 13, 2000. Arnold was 94 years, 9 months and 16 days old.

Besides his parents, Arnold was preceded in death by his brother Walter Sonksen; sister Melinda Bornhoft; and nieces Barbara Rundell and Marjorie Stahl.

He is survived by his wife Gladys of Manning; brother Joe Sonksen and his wife Edna of Manning; niece Lois and her husband Lyle Hansen of Denison; cousins, including Velma Gunther of Miami, Florida, who grew up with Arnold and Joe; and other relatives.
