Sorrow coming right upon the heels of a home's supreme joy, was the bitter experience of Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Schrum - whose home is 6 1/2 miles north of Manning, on Sunday night, December 3rd, 1922, when their sweet baby boy Arlo, passed from the embrace of its earthly parents to the arms of Jesus.
Born on Armistice Day, November 11th, 1922, both mother and baby did well. Then about a week ago it was found that the child had some intestinal trouble, to which it ultimately succumbed. At the time of the child's death it was 22 days old. The one thing which soothes the torn hearts of the parents is the knowledge that their baby lies.
"Safe in the Arms
of Jesus,
Safe on His gentle breast,
There by His love o'ershaded
Sweetly his soul doth rest."
A largely attended funeral service was held at the home on December 15th conducted by the Rev. H. Coates, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Manning Cemetery.
