Arlo Pfannkuch
Service was held Tuesday, December 14, 2004 for Arlo Pfannkuch, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Patrick R. Sparling and Reverend Daniel Vogel officiated. Organist was Carlys Stribe. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery in Manning, Iowa with Jennifer Pfannkuch, Angie Pfannkuch, Heather Heiman, Tonya Heiman, Melissa Heiman, Cory Heiman, Curtis Pfannkuch, and Cody Pfannkuch.
Arlo Carl, son of Henry and Therese Louis (Nobling) Pfannkuch, was born June 1, 1914, near Wall Lake in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended a rural school that was located on the family farm. After completing his schooling, he worked on various farms in the area. He was able to buy his first car from the money he earned from hunting and trapping during this time.
On September 6, 1942, Arlo was united in marriage with Jessie Minnie Sonksen at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. They lived in California where he worked for Caterpillar, grinding valves for diesel engines. He also worked for Canada Dry. In 1948 they returned to Manning to be near Jessie's family where they continued to live and raise their family. Arlo preferred living in Iowa where he could pursue his hobbies, especially chasing up and down streams. Arlo was a successful salesman throughout his life. He sold stainless steel cookware, vacuum cleaners and AAL Insurance, among other things. He also had a long-standing vacuum cleaner repair business in his home. Arlo was recognized, for his successful sales with trips to Las Vegas and Mexico.
His wife died in 1983 and Arlo continued to live in their home in Manning. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working on cars, especially Kaiser-Frazer's.
Arlo was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning where he served as Sunday school superintendent for 17 years. He enjoyed being a member of Lutheran Laymen's League and a bible study group. Arlo was a simple man never needing or wanting worldly goods.
Due to failing health, Arlo became a resident of Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake in November of 2000. He died there on December 9, 2004, at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 8 days.
Preceding Arlo in death are his wife, son Craig Pfannkuch, grandson Shawn Heiman, parents, brothers Wilmer, Melvin, and Vernon Pfannkuch and a sister, Gladys Mae in infancy.
He is survived by his children Reverend Wayne Pfannkuch and wife Irene of Lytton; Janice Pfannkuch and husband David Bent of Omaha, Nebraska; Bruce Pfannkuch and wife Rita of Harlan; daughter-in-law Chris Pfannkuch of Phoenix, Arizona; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister Louise and husband LaVern Schultz of Lake View; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
