Arlene Ellen, daughter of Henry and Ella (Segebart) Ladehoff, was born December 22, 1929, on a farm near Kiron in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural schools. The family moved to Manilla and Arlene graduated from Manilla High School. She then worked at Montgomery Ward in Denison. Arlene was baptized into the Lutheran faith on May 18, 1930 and confirmed April 2, 1944.
On February 18, 1951, Arlene was united in marriage with Duane E. Wegner at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. They lived on her husband’s family farm for a year and then farmed south of Botna. Arlene was a homemaker and helped on the farm. Four children were born to this union. Arlene worked at Saunder’s Steak House for a short time before starting to work at the Manning Plaza (long term care). She completed training for her Licensed Practical Nurse certificate in Harlan during this time. She retired after 32 years at the Plaza. Arlene and Duane had moved into Manning in 1978.
Arlene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning where she participated in bible study and volunteered many hours. She was also an active member of the VFW Auxiliary, receiving her 55 year award in 2012. She was a busy woman who enjoyed her flower gardening, crocheting, quilting, baking (especially her angel food cakes) and cooking.
When her health began to fail in 2005, Arlene and Duane spent a year at Swan House in Carroll. She then moved to the Exira Care Center while her husband returned to their home in Manning. Arlene died at the Exira Care Center rather unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 23 days.
Preceding her in death are her parents; granddaughter Kaelyn Odendahl and brother Robert Ladehoff.
Arlene is survived by her husband of 60 years, Duane Wegner of Manning; four children: Gail and husband James Richardson of Audubon; Dean Wegner and wife Kim of Phoenix, Arizona; Karen and husband Gary Odendahl of Carroll and Roger Wegner of Westside; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; six sisters: Rita Lustig of Huntington Beach, California; Esther Zehrung of Northglenn, Colorado; Betty and husband Tom Scott of Westminister, Colorado; JoAnn Rutherford of Lakewood, Colorado; Lorraine Wolfe of Loomis, California and Darlene Warnke of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
