Funeral services were held for Antoinette "Nettie" Stangl Thursday, November 19, 1987, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Dedham, Iowa. Reverend Father Don Slaven officiated the service with Beth Stangl Clarke as lector. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Dedham, Iowa, with Mike Niehaus, Delbert VonBon, Robert Niehaus, Jeff Stangl, Eugene Derner, and Jerry Bluml as casketbearers.
On Wednesday, November 18, 1987, Rosaries were held at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and prayer service was held at 8:15 p.m. in the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa.
Antoinette, daughter of Clem and Christina Leiting Pile, was born February 16, 1879, on a farm near Arcadia, the daughter of German immigrants.
January 19, 1897, Nettie was united in marriage with John H. Stangl who lived on a farm near Roselle. After their marriage John farmed 140 acres in the Templeton and Arcadia area and had a saloon business in Arcadia. Nettie and John continued to farm during the Prohibition years and when Prohibition ended he operated a tavern in Dedham for many years. He died June 6, 1959, and Nettie continued to live alone in Dedham until she entered the Carroll Health Center in Carroll when she was 94 years old. Nettie died there Monday, November 16, 1987, at the age of 108 years and 9 months.
John and Nettie were the parents of 20 children who were all born at home. Fourteen children lived to adulthood and were married; six children died in infancy. Besides those six children, Nettie was also preceded in death by the following children: Clem Stangl, Adeline Niehaus, Clarence (Clark) Stangl, Mike Stangl, Isabelle McDonald, Clayton Stangl, Wilson Stangl, and Bill Stangl; by two sisters; and by one brother.
Nettie is survived by the following sons and daughter: Caroline Smith, of Holly Michigan; Oswald (Barney) Stangl, of Knoxville, Iowa; Alice Claire Brodie, of Los Angeles, California; Janet Stam, of Knoxville, Iowa; Patrick Stangl, of Ottumwa; and Mary Kay Mendez, of Holly, Michigan; by 46 grandchildren; by 162 great-grandchildren; by 114 great-great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-great-grandchildren.
Nettie was a member of St. Joseph's Parish at Dedham and was an honorary member of St. Joseph's Guild, and a member of Sacred Heart Court 454 of the Catholic Daughters of America. Nettie was Carroll Count's oldest resident and was fifth oldest in the state of Iowa. At the age of 98 she was queen of the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home float in the Breda Centennial Parade. On her 100th birthday she was honored as the first member of the Carroll Health Center's Centennial Club.

p.m. today at St. Joseph's Church. She was a homemaker and had been a member of St.
Joseph's Church, St. Joseph's Guild and Sacred Heart Court 454 of Catholic Daughters of
America. Survivors include four daughters, Mary Kay Mendez and Caroline Smith, both of
Holly, Mich., Alice Claire Brodie of Los Angeles, Calif., and Janet Stam of Knoxville; two
sons, Oswald "Barney" of Knoxville and Patrick of Ottumwa; 46 grandchildren; 162
great-grandchildren; 114 great-great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-great grandchildren.
