Funeral Of Mrs. F. Schumann Held Wednesday
September 27, 1934 Manning Monitor

Mrs. Fred Schumann, a resident of this community for many years, passed away at her home west of town last Monday morning, September 10th. Her death came as a shock to her many friends and loved ones.

Anna Schumann was born in the province of Schleswig Holstein, Germany, on February the 4th, 1870. She was the twin daughter of John and Elizabeth Schelldorf.

She came to the United States with her parents in the year 1871, and they came to Bryant in Clinton County, Iowa. Her father, John Schelldorf, was an engineer in a mill in that town. Later they moved to a farm in Crawford County and there Mrs. Schumann was brought up. When she was twenty-eight years of age she was married to Mr. Henry Kusel and to this union there was born one daughter, Irene, now Mrs. Herman Dedon of Pueblo, Colorado.

In the year 1903 Anna was married to Mr. Fred Schumann and to them were born two children: Leona (Mrs. Maurice Heider) who preceded her in death in 1931. Ed was the only son and he and Mrs. Irene Dedon survive their mother. Mr. Fred Schumann died in June of last year. Beside the two children left to mourn her there are also left three brothers and two sisters: Mr. George Schelldorf of Manning; Mr. William Schelldorf of Manning; Mr. John Schelldorf, Margaret (Mrs. Wulf) twin sister, of Sioux City; Emma (Mrs. Ohde) of Manning.

There is also an uncle, Mr. Fred Hagedorn of Manning and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ed Schumann and son-in-law, Mr. Herman Dedon. Mrs. Schumann had experienced many sorrows in her life. The untimely death of her daughter, Leona, left an ineffaceable mark, and the passing of her husband in June last brought a grief which time did not heal. She was a woman of great enterprise and earnestness, a good Christian mother and wife, and a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church. She died under tragic circumstances on Monday morning, September the 17th, in the 64th year of her age.

Acting as pallbearers were John Steinhauer, Fike Anton, Emil Kuhn, Chris Bohnsack, Nick Andresen and Henry Voege.

O joy that seekest me through pain
I cannot close my heart to Thee,
I cannot close my heart to Thee,
I trace the rainbow thru the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be.

Out-of-town friends and relatives at the funeral included: Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Dedon of Pueblo, Colorado; Mrs. George Wulf of Sioux City; Mr. Horace Wulf, William Schelldorf, Mrs. Arthur Bong, Miss Dell O'Connell of Sioux City; Mrs. William Rath and Mrs. Cecil Adkins of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. John Schumann, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Schumann, Mrs. LeRoy Schumann, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Schelldorf of Westside; Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Alt, Mr. and Mrs. Glen McLaughlin, Audubon; and Mr. and Mrs. Amandus Kracht of Westside.

Genealogical notes:

If you are related to Anna or Irene please contact me.

Anna's first husband was Henry Kusel. Henry was a brother to my grandfather August Kusel.

Unfortunately because of the divorce between Anna & Henry we lost track of their daughter, Irene. We are not even sure if Irene took the Kusel name or the Schelldorf name.
Henry moved to Oregon and remarried so he did not stay around the Manning area.

This obituary is not clear as to if Irene had any children.

So please e-mail Dave Kusel if you can help.
