Mrs. Anna Peper nee Petersen was born on the 13th day of January, 1822 in Norderstapel Schleswig Holstein. Here she was educated in the Christian faith and confirmed according to the Lutheran ritual. On the 8th day of June, 1844 the deceased was married to George Peper who preceded her in death. After being married six months they removed to Clova, Schleswig Holstein, Hollingstead Parish. This union was blessed with 10 children who were baptized in Clova, 5 of whom have gone to the world beyond. In May 1873 the family came to America locating in Davenport, Iowa, and soon after that removing on a farm in Clinton County. Two years later they again changed residence, coming to Iowa Township, Crawford County, Iowa. After retiring the parents made their home with their son Claus of Astor, Iowa.
Here the husband, George Peper died on the 5th of February, 1895 reaching the age of 75 years. The deceased remained with her son, Claus where she was cared for with loving hands. Five children preceded the mother in death, 2 dying in Germany while yet infants. One daughter, Mrs. Catherine Rohde died in Manilla in 1890, another daughter, Mrs. Mary Thede died in Dakota in 1899, and a son, George died at Manilla in 1907. Those that mourn her death are the following: the children, Mrs. Anna Umland of Manilla, John of Denison, Claus of Astor, Mrs. Christine Jensen of Milford, Iowa, and Mrs. Margareta Dethlefs of Manning. Furthermore 42 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, and a large number of friends and acquaintances.
The deceased was never seriously ill and even at the advanced age needed very little care. Even last Monday evening she occupied her place at the table as usual. Tuesday morning however she complained and after summoning a doctor it was learned that pneumonia had set in and that her condition threatened to become serious. Her sickness grew worse and culminated in her death on Wednesday, February 19th at 12 o'clock at noon. She reached the exceptional high age of 91 years, 1 month and 6 days.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Friedens Church in Manilla. A great number had assembled in Manilla to render the last respects to her mortal remains. The quartet of the church sang some very appropriate songs. Rev, A.W. Fruechte preached the funeral.
