Her Family Former Neighbors of Abraham Lincoln
Amelia J. Smith was born in New Salem, Illinois, March 22, 1844, where her family was friends and neighbors of Abraham Lincoln. She passed away January 8, 1932, at the age of 87 years, 9 months, and 16 days, the daughter of Eden and Malinda (Caldwell) Lotspeich.

At the age of three her father, Eden Lotspeich moved with his family to Des Moines County, Iowa. There Mrs. Smith grew to womanhood, attended college at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and taught school for a time.

October 1, 1868, she was married to Myron Chamberlain Smith. In 1892, the family moved to Hubbell, Nebraska, and later to Lincoln which has since been their home. For the past five months Mrs. Smith has been at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Orren W. Wyatt at Manning, Iowa. All that skill and loving hands could do have made her comfortable during her last days.

She is survived by five children: Mrs. Marshall Moore of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Mrs. John H. Van Scoy, Rippey; Milo W. Smith, Hubbell, Nebraska; Mrs. Orren W. Wyatt, Manning, Iowa; Clara L. Smith, Lincoln, Nebraska.

She also leaves 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Her husband preceded her in death seven years ago. Their older son, Frank is also deceased.

Mrs. Smith in early life joined the Methodist Church and was a devout member throughout her long and useful life.

Her grandfather, Ralph Lotspeich was a circuit rider in early Ohio Methodism and was the older preacher with whom Peter Cartright began his ministry as was the custom in those early days. On October 1, 1918, Mr. and Mrs. Smith celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Smith was a devoted wife and mother and always keenly interested in community affairs. She was a member of Belknap Woman's Relief Corps, the Home Missionary Society and Ladies' Aid Society of the First M.E. Church, Lincoln, Nebraska.

A short funeral service was held for her at Manning, Iowa, Sunday morning, where Rev. Crissman paid her a beautiful and fitting tribute.

On Monday, January 11 at two o'clock, services were held at the First Methodist Church in University Place, conducted by Rev. W.E. Lowther, who spoke feelingly of the triumph of this aged saint.

Mrs. Maud Campbell sang.

A.F. Ackerman, Charles Trombla, Leslie Thomas, Dr. Gerald Butler, Professor J.C. Jensen, and J.D. Morgan acted as pall bearers.

Interment was in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska.
