Alvin Joseph, son of Henry and Catherine (Rupiper) Steffes, was born April 11, 1918, near Templeton, Iowa. He attended rural school near his home. After completing his education, he began farming with his father.
On January 7, 1941, Alvin was united in marriage with Hilda Fischer in the Chapel at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton because it was too costly to heat the church. Seven children were born to this union. In addition to farming, Alvin owned and operated Steffes Plumbing & Heating in Templeton. Along with his boys he built several homes in Templeton including the home he and Hilda moved to in 1977 when they moved into Templeton.
Alvin served as Eden Township Clerk for many years and was very involved when the school building in Templeton was torn down. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish in Templeton and a member of Knights of Columbus.
When Alvin’s health began to fail, he became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in April of 2000. He died there on Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 1 day.
Preceding Alvin in death are his parents; brother Frank (Cordellia) Steffes; sister Wilhelmina and (Anselm) Irlbeck; brothers-in-law Frank Kasparbauer and Donald Fuchs; and sister-in-law Rita Steffes.
