Alvin Ernest Paulsen, the son of Henry and Evelina (Hass) Paulsen, was born August 2, 1925, at his parents' home near Viola Center, Iowa and died March 18, 2004, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa, at the age of 78 years, 7 months, and 16 days.
Alvin was baptized and confirmed in Lincoln Township at Trinity Lutheran Church north of Audubon. He attended school in Viola Center, and Audubon High School. Alvin was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 16, 1945. During his tour of duty, he served in Japan. He was honorably discharged on December 14, 1946, and returned to the Audubon area, then moved to St. Louis, Missouri. Alvin was employed at the Foster Brothers Manufacturing Company, where they assembled hospital beds.
On August 2, 1958, he was united in marriage to Bessie Mary Moore, at the courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri. They lived in St. Louis for a short time, then moved to Saint Marys, Missouri. Alvin was employed as a security guard at Proctor and Gamble until he retired. They lived in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, from 1977, until they moved to Audubon in 1989. Bessie died February 14, 2000. Alvin continued to live in their home in Audubon. Alvin became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon on August 29, 1999. He was a member of the Dale Christensen Post #4119 V.F.W., Audubon, Iowa, and Audubon Post No. 120, American Legion, Audubon.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his wife, were his parents; infant brothers: Max Paulsen, Mark Paulsen, and Lester Paulsen; his brothers: Marvin Paulsen and wife, Ethel; Herman Paulsen and wife, Evelyn; and Henry Paulsen; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bob Goddard, Edward Putz, Leo Putz, and Barbara Putz.
Alvin is survived by his step-daughter, Delores Burt and her husband, James W. Jr. of Fairland, Oklahoma; his step-grandchildren: J. Wesley Burt, III and his wife, Christine of Seneca, Oklahoma; and Lyndee Downs and her husband, Alan of Festus, Missouri; his step-great-grandchildren: James Burt and Joshua Burt, both of Neodesha, Kansas; Jacob Burt of Seneca, Kansas; and Travis Vanderhoof of Monett, Oklahoma; his sister, Lily Goddard of Coon Rapids, Iowa; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bobby Putz of Rockford, Illinois; Kirllean and her husband, William of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Vergie Perry of Rockford, Illinois; Lucille Paulsen of Harlan, Iowa; LaVonne Putz of Jackson, Missouri; special friends: Bob and Clara Schmitz; Everett and Izzie Nelson; Robert Boldt; Regin and Sue Rugaard; and Roy "Sam" and Lois Lawson, all of Audubon. Alvin is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family of Mr. Paulsen appreciates the many expressions of sympathy and concern. Everyone is invited to meet with the family in the church fellowship room following the committal service.
