Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Rev. Daryl Landsverk, Pastor of Badger Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. Thursday until the time of service at the funeral home.
Surviving is her daughter, Penny Smith of Des Moines, granddaughters, Tracy Runkel of Story City, Laura (Woody) Wolfe of Fort Dodge, Christine (Rod) Kubik of Des Moines; grandsons, Scott, Kyle, and Eric Harklau, Vance (Wendy) Smith of St. Marys, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents Johann F. and Bertha Johanna (Stein) Schmidt, a daughter, Christine "Mickey" Harklau; sisters, Velma Gunter, Rose Calligan, Ann Ackley; and a brother, Herman Schmidt.
Dorothy D. Schmidt was born March 21, 1911, in Manning, Iowa. She attended schools there. Following her education she moved to Fort Dodge.
On July 7, 1931, she was united in marriage to Vance Cowell and they established their home in Fort Dodge.
In 1938, Vance passed away. Dorothy then moved to Des Moines where she was a waitress.
She was an avid gardener, interior decorator, enjoyed traveling, and spending time with her family.
