Paul was inducted into the Army on January 4, 1966. He trained at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in the 155mm Projectile course as a Field Artillery Crewman. He served with A Battery, 1st Battalion, 2nd Artillery, USAREUR in Baumholder, Germany, and at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Corporal Vogl received the Good Conduct Medal and Expert Marksman Award and was discharged December 18, 1967.
Interment was in the parish cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Vogl was discharged from the Army in December, 1967, with the rank of corporal. Pallbearers were Jim Hanna, Larry Stoll, Neil Ludwig, Orville Reiman, Jim Berg, and Ray Hagedorn. Arrangements were in charge of the Ohde Funeral Home of Manning.
Mr. Vogl drowned about 4 p.m. July 14, 1968, at Crescent Beach, Black Hawk Lake, Lake View.
Relatives attending the rites from a distance included Srs. M. Juliana and M. Juliette of Dubuque; Mary Vogl, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Harold Seifert, Minneota, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Vogl, James, Don, and Frank Vogl, Jr. of Morgan, Minnesota. Others were from Halbur, Carroll, Atlantic, Willey, Dedham, Coon Rapids, Botna, Denison, Templeton, Arcadia, and Lake City.
Paul Vogl Drowned in Black Hawk Lake
Paul Antone Vogl, 21, of Manning drowned about 4 p.m. Sunday in Black Hawk Lake
at Lake View. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix W. Vogl of Manning.
Dr. C.E. Lierman of Lake View, Sac County medical examiner, reported that Vogl, a non-swimmer, had gone beyond the area at Crescent Beach marked off for non-swimmers. It required 15 minutes or longer for divers to find Vogl's body, Dr. Lierman said. Artificial respiration and cardiac massage failed to revive him. Life guards were on duty at the crowded beach.
Funeral rites will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church, Manning, with the Rev. Norbert Weber officiating. Burial will be in the Manning parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning after 4 p.m. Monday. There will be rosaries at 8 p.m. both Monday and Tuesday, led by Fr. Weber, and also at 8:30 both nights, led by the Altar and Rosary Society.
Vogl was born near Manning on September 11, 1946, and graduated from Manning High School in 1964. He was employed by Lester Wiese and Sons here for a year and a half. He entered military service on January 3, 1966, and was stationed part of the time in Germany. Since February, 1968, he had been employed as a lineman for Iowa Public Service Company at Carroll. He was to have been married on August 31 to Dian Klocke of Templeton.
Surviving are his parents and the following brothers and sisters: Ronald, Manning; Joan, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Jerry (Judy) Muhlbauer, Halbur; Doris, Felix Jr., David, Margie, Patrick, and Billy, at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kasperbauer, Sr., Manning.
His mother is the former Hilda Kasperbauer, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Antone Vogl, preceded him in death.
