Leroy entered the Air Corps on April 27, 1942. He trained at Fort George Wright, Spokane, Washington. On June 22, 1942, he embarked to the Southwest Pacific where he was engaged in the New Guinea, Bismarck, Archipelago and Western Pacific campaigns. Leroy was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Theater with three bronze stars. He was discharged at McLellan Field, Sacramento, California, on October 5, 1945, holding the rank of Private First Class. He served three years, five months and nine days.
Leroy & Mary Mundt were married November 5, 1945 and had 8 children:
Linda (MHS 1964), Janice (MHS 1966), Barry (died as a baby), Betty (MHS 1969),
Beverly (MHS 1970), Vickie (MHS 1972), Terry (MHS 1977) and Dean (MHS 1979).
For 29 years, until his retirement in 1975, Leroy worked for the Standard Oil Company as
a bulk fuel truck driver.
He was nicknamed "Gassey Mundt" for his many years of service hauling gasoline and
diesel fuel to farmers around Manning.
Leroy owned/operated the Mundt Oil Company in which he sold bulk oil for engines and he
also work for the Standard Oil Fertilizer company in Carroll, IA.

MUNDT MANNING—Leroy H. Mundt, 68, of Manning, died
Monday, May 9, 1983 at the Manning General Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past year with "Lou Gehrig's disease." He worked
for Fred Petersen's Garage before joining Standard Oil Company and operated a tank
wagon farm service for more than 30 years before retiring seven years ago. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Ohde Funeral Home
in Manning with the Rev. Msgr. Dean Walker, pastor of Sacred Heart Church of Manning,
as celebrant. Maureen Halbur will be organist and Livie Mohr will sing. Burial will be in
Sacred Heart parish cemetery with military honor. Serving as casketbearers will be Keith
Weller, Wayne Schwarte, Harry and Marcus Mundt, David Kaufman and John Fromm. Mr. Mundt is survived by his wife Mary, Manning; the following children: Mrs. Lowell
(Linda) Stolfus, New Hampton, Iowa; Mrs. Kenneth (Janice) Mickels, Omaha; Betty Fink,
DeIoit, Iowa; Beverly Mundt, Omaha; Mrs. Tom (Vickie) Welch, Omaha; Terry Mundt, at
home, and Dean Mundt, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; seven grandchildren and two brothers:
Gilbert, Manilla, and Orville Mundt, Rogers, Ark. Mr. Mundt was born June 14, 1913, near Manilla, a son of Harry and Sophie Schutt
Mundt. He was married on November 5, 1945, to Mary Kaufman at St. Joseph Catholic
Church in Earling. After their marriage, the Mundts lived in California for a brief time and then came to the
Manning area. His health began to fail last year and he was cared for at the Manilla
Manor Nursing Home. He was transferred to the Manning General Hospital on May 9
where he died.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Barry Ray in infancy and a sister, Mrs.
LaVerne Jorgensen, on May 1, 1983.
He graduated from Manilla High School in 1930 and during the 1930s worked for Shell Oil
Company in California. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific and
was stationed on New Guinea and in Australia.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts in Manning.
He was fond of hunting, fishing, traveling and playing cards.
