Gib was discharged at the Separation Center Camp Grant, Illinois, November 25, 1945. Gilbert H. Peters, TEC 3 service # 37420607 received the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, Good Conduct Medal WWII Victory Medal, one Service Stripe and six Overseas Service Bars.

THE COMMITTAL SERVICE. Mass of Christian Burial for Gilbert H. Peters was held on Friday February 6, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Manning, Iowa. Celebrant was Reverend James McAlpin and Msge. A.W. Behrens with Ray Thielen as lector; Michelle Ramsey and Robyn Ramsey as mass servers. Music was provided by the Sacred Heart Choir with Maureen Halbur as organist. Interment was held at the Manning Cemetery with David Boehme, Nathan Peters, Alex Ohl, Erika Ohl, Steve McCollum, and Andrea Kloehn as casket bearers. Military honors were provided by American Legion, Emil Ewoldt Post 22 and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3517. Gilbert Henry, son of John A. and Clara Lohmeier Peters, was born October 25, 1914, near Arcadia, Iowa. At the age of 3 years, his family moved to Manning. He attended country school and graduated from Manning High School in 1932. After graduation Gilbert worked as a bookkeeper for F.D. Ross Ford dealership in Manning. On June 24, 1942, he was drafted into the United States Army. During World War II, he served with the Military Police in Iceland, England, and France. After being honorably discharged on November 25, 1945, Gilbert returned to Manning and on May 6, 1946, was united in marriage to Bernadette L. Behrens at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. Three children were born to this union. Gilbert and Bernadette made their home in Manning. Gilbert continued his work with F.D. Ross Ford until 1958 when he began working for the city of Manning, first with the Municipal Light Department and later as a police officer. After retiring in 1980, he drove bus for the Senior Center. Bernadette died on May 29, 1995. Gilbert was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning, Manning School Board, Veterans of Foreign War, and the American Legion, serving as Post Commander and recently receiving his 50-year pin. In October of 1997, Gilbert moved to Mi Casa Nursing Center in Mesa, Arizona where he died on January 31, 1998. He reached the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 6 days. Besides his parents and wife, Gilbert was preceded in death by two brothers: Orla Peters and his wife, Edna; Elmer Peters and his wife, May. Gilbert is survived by his children; JoAnn and her husband Ed Ohl, of Sparta, New Jersey; Janice and her husband, Larry Boehme, of Hillsboro, Wisconsin; Brian J. Peters and his wife, Janet, of Phoenix, Arizona; eight grandchildren; Andrea Boehme Kloehn and her husband, Robert, of Cary, North Carolina; Loma and Courtney Boehme, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; David Boehme, of Hillsboro, Wisconsin; Erika Ohl, of Boulder, Colorado; Alexander Ohl, of Sparta, New Jersey; Nathan and Drew Peters, of Phoenix, Arizona; two nieces: Shirley McCollum, of Manning , and Beverly Schrum, of Manilla; and other relatives and many friends. |
