Elberta Edith, daughter of Louis and Bertha (Joachimsen - Hagedorn) Mundt, was born September 12, 1915, at home northwest of Manning, Iowa. Elberta was baptized as a young girl and attended rural school near her home. She then attended Manning High School.
Elberta lived on the family farm until her marriage with Ernest Grimm on November 20, 1935, at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Manning. Ernest and Elberta lived on a farm near Manning and two children were born to this union. She was confirmed as an adult at Zion Lutheran Church by Pastor Ansorge. During World War II, Ernest moved his family to Hastings, Nebraska, where he worked at the arsenal from 1942-45. They then moved back to Manning and purchased a home. Elberta was a homemaker and raised their two children. In 1956 Elberta began to work outside the home. She was a clerk at Brown McDonald's and Johnson's department stores for 25 years. Then she worked at the Dime Store for nine years until her retirement in 1990. Ernest died on February 14, 1988.
Elberta was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Evening Circle and the Zion ladies quilting group. She was an RSVP volunteer and helped with bingo at the Plaza. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting and embroidering.
When her health began to fail in May of 2003, Elberta became a resident of the Manning Plaza. On December 26, 2003, she entered the Manning Regional Healthcare Center and died there on Saturday, January 3, 2004, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 21 days.
