Here are several examples of school profiles and memories to show you what we are looking for to use in the Manning school history book.
This type of information will make the history book more personal and interesting than having just facts, figures, and pictures.

Please take some time to dig out a few school pictures and also write up some facts about your school days. Also please write down at least one fond and/or really funny memory you have from school.
Send your things in soon - time is running out and we'll have to start the editing process.

I can remember the 1970-71 Eighth grade basketball game at Harlan
By Dave Kusel.

Harlan would present a trophy to an outstanding player at the end of their Junior High games. After the game all of the Manning players were out on the Manning bus but the driver and Coach Duane Boersma were still in the gym. For some reason a couple of the Harlan players had a beef with our eighth grade team so they came on the Manning bus and started a fight. One of them had a trophy in his hand. He became verbally abusive and the first Manning player he encountered was David Wiese. After a few moments Dave got tired of this player and asked him to get off the bus. Well that player didn't like Dave's suggestion so he hit him on the head with the trophy. Dave fell backwards, nearly knocked unconscious. Lynn Mork then got involved and got between the Dave and the Harlan player and told him to get off the bus. It was at this time that he slapped Lynn in the face several times. Before Lynn could react Jeff Siepker didn't say anything but literally tackled the guy through the doorway and out on the sidewalk where he laid on top of him.

About this time Duane and the bus driver were coming over to the bus and pulled Jeff off of the pinned Harlan player.

When we got back to Manning, Dave Wiese headed home and right to bed. He had a big bump on his head and obviously wouldn't be feeling the best. But Dave was more concerned that he would get in trouble with his parents over the fight on the bus. Of course the big confrontation spread like wild fire through town and Mike Phillips told his parents. So Gib Phillips called the Wiese home to see how Dave was doing which was a surprise to Gene and Jean Wiese. Gene went to Dave's bedroom to find out exactly what happened; Dave missed school the next day but was OK considering he had a trophy broken over his head.

For Jeff Siepker is was a different story at first. Wayne Curlile told him that he was in trouble for fighting with the Harlan player, but fortunately the Harlan player confessed that he had started the fight and was completely at fault. Thus ended the wild junior high basketball incident.

Dan sent this school biography in just today (March 14). We are looking for a picture to go along with his profile but want to show it to you to give you some more ideas for your own profile.

Dan "Boney" Vollstedt's (son of Roger & Rosie Vollstedt) best sport was golf. Dan is the only one in MHS history to go to the Boys' State Golf Tournament all four years of High School. He was fortunate enough to be a member of four very good teams during his high school years. Dan was a district medalist his Junior year. During his Freshman year the Boys' team played at Venker Golf Course in Ames, and the other three years in state play were played at Finkbine in Iowa City.

In basketball, Dan was selected to the second team all Mid-West conference team. He came off the bench but was still selected All-Conference, averaging about 12 points a game his Senior year.

In baseball, Dan was a unanimous choice first team all Mid-West Conference his Senior year. He played center field and batted over .400 his senior year.

In football, Dan lettered his Sophomore year.

After High School, Dan attended the University of Iowa, earning his degree in Elementary education. He is currently a sixth grade geography teacher for the Des Moines Public Schools. He is also the head Boys' Golf Coach for Des Moines Lincoln.

Another way we can list your school information is in a family school Ad.
When you look at the Ad on this web page (which will be in color in the book if they were originally color photos) you'll notice the color is not a true color. This is because we have to convert the Acrobat PDF Ad files to a CMYK color setting for the publisher to use, and when I convert them back to a JPG file they will look off color here.
Also the text won't be sharp on this web page sample which is why I have it posted just below the Ad.
These Ads will look realistic in the final printed book.
The Stribe family has proudly supported the Manning School for over 50 years; the most recent being the concession stand project.
Dean attended Washington No. 3, and Marjorie (Rowedder) attended Washington No. 4 and No. 1 Country Schools before entering Manning High School. Dean was in FFA, played football and basketball. Marjorie was cheerleader her senior year, was in all vocal musical groups, and the Jr./Sr. class play.
Son, Curt played basketball and was a football manager. His 1972 basketball team broke the school record for most points scored in one game; 113 vs. Exira 56. He also designed the 1972 Comet cover and title page. Curt and his wife Caryl (Woebke) are the parents of Kelsey, Heather, and Kyle. All three played basketball at MHS. Kelsey also performed in the band. Kyle holds the basketball records for most points scored in a career with 1523, most points in a season with 727, and tied with Brian Fogleman for a single point game of 47. His team played in the class 1A State Championship game in 2004. Kyle attended Buena Vista College where he also played basketball, and graduated in May 2009.
Son, Keith participated in football, basketball, track, and baseball. In 1973 the football team qualified for the State Playoffs. In the spring of 1971, Keith and his 800-yard relay team won first place at the state track meet. He was named by "Big 8 Magazine" to their top-100 football players' list, and later in 1974, co-captained the South Team in the Iowa North-South Shriner All-Star football games. In 1977, Keith was inducted into the Buena Vista College Athletic Hall of Fame, where he played football. After graduating from college, he coached basketball for 25 years; the last 14 years at Carroll High School where he achieved the most wins as a coach with a record of 230 wins, 78 losses (career 330 - 187).
Keith's wife, Mary Jane (Rohe), played volleyball, softball, and was on the first MHS girls' track team when girls' sports started again in 1973. Keith and Mary Jane were the 1974 Homecoming King and Queen. Their children, Nolan, Sara, and Landon, excelled in all sports and graduated from Carroll High School. In 1998 Sara broke the Iowa girls' basketball scoring record. Now Mrs. Sara Vander Sanden, she was inducted into the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame in March 2009.
