Mighty Bulldogs
We continue to promote the school history book data and picture
collecting process this week. Below are several photos that were taken by the Manning
Monitor over the years. We have questions on several of them so if you can confirm, add
to, or correct the information below please let us know.
This first picture above is of Naomi Ross (MHS 1940) and is her Homecoming
Queen photo. A Homecoming King & Queen list of names along with pictures could be
a possible section in the future school history book.
This picture shows the 1965 dedication of a new U.S. flagpole and Bulldog monument
that was placed on the north side of the old high school along 141 which would be just
north of the present day Rec Center racquetball court. The 1965 Student Council sponsored
the construction. Darrell Weems (left) and Darrel Baker (right) are raising the flag. In 1973
the monument was moved to the new school and can be found near the main entrance of
the high school.
MHS class of 1965 Senior Homecoming float south of the old high school band room.
This area was used for P.E. and practice football.
Possibly 1969 Boys' State members (photo taken in basement of Legion hall).
Back: Larry Stangl, Larry Mohr, Darrel Baker; Front: Mark Heinicke, John Dobler,
Steve Walters.
1973 Cheerleaders posing in the old gym which is along the east wall of the present
day Rec Center gym. L to R: Debbie Nissen 1975, Nancy Wiese 1973, Jessica Zerwas
1974, Becky Tank (on Jess' shoulders) 1974, Peggy Hargens 1973, Judy Stoberl 1975.
1973 Boys' State members in front of the old high school. L to R: Bill "Twiggy"
Johnson, Mike Gawley, Larry Mundt, Jon Ahrendsen, Randy Renze, Paul Renze.
Jr High football picture of four class of 1978 members at the back entrance of the old
gym which is presently the front entrance of the Rec Center. Back: Jeff "Moose" Mohr, Jim
Opperman; Front: Brad Bjorkgren, Steve Phillips.
1967 AFS student Lone (Ostergaard) Hansen standing in front of the old high school
along 141. Her host parents were Willis & Lavon Puck.
Football coaches Scott "Oscar" Robinson, Larry Rowedder and Jim Murphy. The old
bandroom in the background was originally an Army Barracks.
PLEASE NOTE: If anyone knows the history of this building such as when it
was moved to that location and where it came from please let me know. This building was
located approximately where the present day sidewalk is located that starts at Main Street
across from the city park. This sidewalk continues on to the east past the baby pool and
over to the main entrance of the Rec Center.
Update -- Cynthia Genzen went to this band room her high school years from
1953 - 56; John Pratt 1950; Joan Wilhelm 1951; Adele (Gray) Christensen 1952. They had
their band practice in the old grade school on 2nd Street (go in the front and downstairs to
the left) so the band room must have come in summer or fall of 1952.
Sandra Hass received the Betty Crocker Homemaker award in 1969. This picture was
taken in the upstairs study hall and library of the old high school on the south side of the
building. The central hallway that went east/west was on the other side of the windows in the background.
New lunch room tables
Recently the lunchroom tables that school kids ate
their dinners on since 1965 were replaced with these new ones. Seated on the right is
Sandra (Hass) Vahl who has the distinction of being one of the first students who sat on
the new lunchroom tables in 1965 when she was an eighth grader.
