David & Eliza Hamer

David John Hamer, son of David and Elizabeth Hamer, was born on May 14, 1816 in Middlesex, England and died September 30, 1898 in Elwood, NE.
His wife Eliza Cave was born September 18, 1809 and died November 20, 1895.
Both David and Eliza are buried in the Manning cemetery (Section C Row 28 south - north).

David Hamer & Eliza Cave were married in Shoreditch, St. Leonards, London, England in 1800 ('s).

According to family stories, Eliza's father was Sir Archabald Cave, Physician to Queen Victoria and Knighted by her.


David & Eliza had 4 children.

William J. Hamer was born in Cowick, Yorkshire, England on February 14, 1847. He ended up in Elwood, Gosper Co., NE where he died on October 31, 1913. William married Martha Isadore Crakes on April 15, 1880 in Crawford county, IA.

Rose Mary Hamer was born on November 2, 1851.

Eliza Hamer Jackson died in California

Emily Hamer was born in Knottingly, Westriding, England on February 9, 1853 and died on July 3, 1907 in Chicago, Illinois. She is buried in Botna, IA.
Emily married William Francis McCarty on April 8, 1872.
They had a daughter, Rose Bell, who was born on the old homestead in Botna.
Rose was first married Charles Edward Morris and after the divorce Rose married Shelby Ward.

The Death of David Hamer marks the passing away of another early pioneer of this section. Prior to two years ago, when his wife died, Mr. Hamer resided in or near Manning for eighteen years or more. Following the death of the wife, he went to live with his son, W. J. Hamer, at Elwood, Nebraska, where he died on Sept. 23.

The remains were brought back to Manning for interment, arriving here on Sunday evening. The funeral was held Monday morning at ten o'clock from the G.A.R. hall.
Rev. S.F. Weaver officiating, and the remains were interred at the family lot in the Manning cemetery. Many were the old friends and neighbors of the dead man, and those following him to the verge of the grave.

He was the parent of four children --one son and three daughters--all of whom survive him.
They are W. J. Hamer and Mrs. Wm. (Mary) Moody, Elwood, Nebraska; Mrs. E. (Eliza) Jackson, Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. (Emily "Emma") McCarthy, Botna, Iowa.
