I'm so sorry to hear about my very good friend Art Zerwas. It was a surprise to me that he had moved to Char Mac in Manning. If I had known that, I would have stopped to see him when I was back there last month. I will try to round up some pictures and info about him and send to you Dave.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Art Zerwas. Grew up in Manilla, and knew him back in the early 60's. May he rest in peace.

Haven't talked to you for quite some time Dave so just wanted to say "Howdy". It sure is nice to look at your website and keep up with the history of Manning and surrounding territory. Thank You and keep up the good work. I will be in Manning the 15th and 16th of this month for a mini class reunion, really just a get together. Maybe I'll see you then.

Daniel Starck's comments are interesting. My grandfather Louis Groteluschen was a member of Trinity from the 1890's to the 1920's. He footed the bill for much of the rebuilding of the church after the 1913 tornado. His life was also threatened in 1918 by hoodlums who accused him of being pro-German. They entered his store in Gray with clubs and chains. The local banker, in the store at the time, asked the hoodlums to wait while he went to the bank to get a copy of my grandfather's war bond portfolio. When the hoodlums saw the record of war bonds, they left.

I am the great-grandson of Rev. Ernst J. W. Starck, the pastor at the Trinity Church during the tornado. I am very happy to have found your web site today! I have been researching my family history and especially the incident in 1917 when Rev. Starck was almost lynched in the Trinity Church yard. I would be very interested in how the Trinity congregation perceived all that. The church history on your sight says, " Pastor Starck faithfully led the congregation through those troublesome years, and the congregation granted him a peaceful dismissal in early 1918." In fact, he ran for his life with his family in the middle of the night.

I was so sorry to learn of the death of Marge Kusel. I remember her from way back in the 1950's when I worked in my dad's grocery store (Manning Food Market). She was such a delight every time she came in. I'll miss her.
