What a nice site you have created. I have previously visited the Hausbarn site and left a message there in which gave my connection to Manning. Thanks for all the work you have done.
Both my mother and father came to Manning from Schleswig/Hostein. My father Herman Boock)came in 1906 and my mother (Elsa M. Peters) in 1910. My mother was a sister to Anna Hinz, the mother of Florence Genzen and Edna Kaspersen. They were married

Great site! Sent to me by friends, John and Joann Pratt of Big Lake, MN; they grew up and graduated from Manning in '52 and 53 I think. Noticed you have a msg below from a JPratt also, but that is not my friend. I have a sister who lives in Denison, Mary and Bill Hanke; he retired from Farmland and she retired as a nurse, worked for the retirement/hospice home there. Keep up the good work; more small towns (like mine) should have a site like this to record the history etc.

With a name like ours, it`s always good to find another one of the family. Not really family, but I`m sure you know what I mean. My ancestors apparently fled from France to escape religous persecution. The more recent members of the family came from London. There is evidence that my grandfather dropped an `e` from the end of original name. Obviously, I would like to hear from you. Cheers, David Cussell

I may have some pictures of my country school Ewoldt#6, near Manning Iowa from the 1950's. It was located 3 miles east on Hwy 141, near my home. Miss Lillian Spear was my teacher from 3rd thru 7th grades. I don't recall the other teachers names prior to her. Manning is my birthplace, I was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church (the old one). My g-grandfather was Claus Struve, grandfather was George Struve, father was Ralph Struve. I have two surviving aunts in Manning, Lois Struve and Fern Jensen along with a number of cousins in the area. My mom lives in Irwin near my sister, Janene Barry and her family. If you would like to use anything I may find, please let me know. My scanner is not working at this time, but I will mail you copies if you would like.

saw your site in the farm news publication so thought Id check it out. I farm southwest of Harlan and was interested in your views on no-till. We are trying to go to more no till ourselves with a fair amount of success. I also firmly believe even with no-till that a guy needs to use terraces as well. What we are seeing in our area is far more surface runoff in no tilled fields, granted the soil erosion is much less than in tilled fields, but I want to keep that moisture in my field as well, give it a chance to soak in. Goes along with having a good soil structure to, as your neice pointed out in study of the effects of tillage and earthworms on infiltration. Anyway, appreciated the site, your doing some very positive work, and Ill be back for a visit again Jeff

Hello Dave, I have enjoyed your advice on your website. The past year I have been unsuccessful in helping Northern Flickers reclaim their cavity in my softwood maple tree from squirrels and European Starlings. It is heartbreaking. If I can get this problem solved, I'd like to "reach out" to the Purple Martins. Keep up the great work! Martha

Dave, Just wanted to let you know that I recently was in New York over St. Patricks Day. There were about 30-35 firefigters from Phoenix that traveled. We were invited by Ladder 25 of FDNY. So we got to see ground zero up close, actually we got down to St. 10 which is directly across from the WTC. It was a very sureal feeling walking around there. The firefighters in New York took excellent care of us, we really had a great time. I was very much impressed with the city for my first time in New York. Anyway hope all is well!

Thanks for the nice pictures on night crawlers. I am contemplating switching my garden to No Till if I can get it drained so earth worms have a better chance. I hope someday to have a page on the natural history of night crawlers at indbio.com and it certainly link to your site. IndBio.com is an educational site and will have much on diet and exercise related to heart problems, which also helps diabetes and cancer.

David, Do you know who owns the original photos used in the Manning Centennial book? I am working on my family tree and I would like to get a copy of the photo of my grandmother and her sister, who had a sewing school in Manning. My grandmother was Minnie Jensen (at the time of the school), she is later Minnie Struve. I am also looking for any information on my great-grandfather Carsten Struve. Thank you for any help you can send my way. Chris Edmunds
