Our first trading point was Vail, and as there were no roads or bridges, we just struck out in the general direction,

ODDS AND ENDS
My father, Marcus Kuhl, crossed Iowa in a covered wagon and his entire
possessions comprised of three horses, a plow, cook stove and a few cooking
utensils, some bedding, ax, hammer, saw, and tines for a harrow. Father thought
he could get the wood here for the harrow.
He reached his acreage in Iowa Township in 1869. It was barren of buildings and fences, and was just wild prairie; father lived in a dugout on a knoll for two years and then built a home, 12 x 14.
Father had come to America in 1867, and worked for Henry
Kuhl for two years in Davenport. He and his cousin purchased 240 acres in Iowa
Township for $6 per acre, buying the land sight unseen. When Father first came
to Crawford County, the nearest settler was five miles away, another at
Walkertown near Manilla and another at Coon Grove.
